Whirlpool Fever Therapy Procedure

Indications
- Viral infections
- Cancer
- Arthritis
- Infections
- Mononucleosis
- Multiple sclerosis
- Lupus erythematosus
(Viruses die at about 102 degrees Fahrenheit.)
Physiological Effects
Increase in metabolism, number of circulating WBC's, activity of WBC's and productivity, and elimination of waste products.
Contraindications
- Very elderly
- Certain heart conditions
- Ischemia
- Exhaustion and dehydration
- Extremely high blood pressure
Equipment
- Glass and straw
- Ice bag
- Pan of ice
- Paper and pencil
- Paper bag
- Sheet
- Swimsuit or underwear
- Thermometer and watch
- Towels and washcloths
Procedure
- Write treatment time on schedule, and, for the sake of the following patient, stay within your time limit.
- Fill with water at 110-112 degrees F. (If patient is obese, do not fill tub completely).
- Have patient drink plenty of water before treatment.
- Have all equipment on hand. Make sure the room is a comfortable temperature. Add fan or heater as necessary. Provide privacy.
- Explain procedure to patient. Provide emotional support.
- Assist into tub. Explain that tub is deeper than floor level. Secure chair for patient.
- Make them comfortable. Provide a headrest; some fasten a sponge pillow with clothespins to the edge of the tub. Make sure chair is secure; provide privacy for use of a swimsuit, or permitting them to use some underwear. Some secure a towel over the whirlpool water directly under the patient's head to protect them from the heat. Adjust the fan and the light to their comfort. Most female patients like the jet pointed to the side. Adjust jet to their comfort.
- Take temperature, pulse, and water temperature, and record every five minutes.
- Have prayer with patient.
(Raise temperature to 102-104, time varies for each.)
